{M-H-O} Madani's 'terror links' return

The disclosure that the Islamist leader Abdul Nasser Madani has had close contacts with the 2008 Bangalore blast conspirators has raised troubling questions about the expediency of political parties in courting people with dubious credentials.

The run-up to the last Lok Sabha elections saw the entire political class rallying for the release of Madani from a Tamil Nadu jail where he was lodged for nine years for his role in the Coimbatore blast.
On his release, he joined the CPM-led LDF , with the Marxists citing his statements repenting past actions and proclamations of being a secularist to justify an alliance which disturbed even many of the party diehards.

The evidence on Madani leading to the issuance of non-bailable warrant against him suggests that he persisted with his alleged terror activities even while in alliance with LDF. They tie in neatly with the evidence that Kerala cops had gathered about alleged collaboration between terror cells and Madani's wife.

Between 2007 and now, Madani was in touch with many of the suspected terror operatives from Kerala. A significant number of these Malayalees, most of them former SIMI members, are either settled in the Gulf or have significant support from those in there. Among those who Madani had been in regular touch were Tadiyantavide Nasir, the Bangalore blasts mastermind, and Sarfaraz Nawaz, who arranged finances for the blasts.

Bangalore police says Madani had visited Lakkeri estate in Kodugu district, from where Nasir, who was nabbed in Bangladesh and brought to India recently, masterminded the Bangalore blasts.

Evidences gathered by central agencies point to the possibility of Madani and his wife maintaining regular contact with extremist elements from Kerala, some of who may have undergone arms training in Pakistan and played a key role in some of the terror attacks in India.

Sarfaraz Nawaz, who arranged finances for the Bangalore blasts and helped in unsuccessfully sending five Kerala youngsters for terror training to Pakistan through Kashmir, has told his interrogators about meeting Madani at his Orphanage in Kollam.

A few days before the Eid of 2007, Nawaz, Nasir and a couple of others visited Madani in Kollam. Nawaz talked about Madani getting furious during their meeting over some dispute. Indicating Nasir's close association with Madani, Nawaz told interrogators that Madani spent the next hour or so with the blast mastermind.

Nasir has also told his interrogators about being in touch with Madani through the period when he planned and executed the Bangalore blasts, a source in the security establishment claimed.

Nasir's original plan was to execute attacks in Chennai and Bangalore, but on the instructions of his financiers in the Gulf region, the plan was curtailed to just Bangalore. The funds for the Bangalore blasts, believed to be a total of about Rs 4 lakh, came from Wali, aka Abdul Aziz, a Pakistani who was among the senior LeT operatives in the Gulf. The money was arranged by Nawaz and transferred through hawala channels.

Partial funding for Nasir's activities in Kerala also came from CAM Basheer, a senior SIMI leader during the Babri Masjid demolition period and who had mysteriously gone missing from the radar of intelligence agencies a few years later.
