Kaliyuga, yes, but then what?
Recently, I had a collection of news
from the various Indian states within
a few hours which went something like this
— a woman stabbed to death on a busy road
by her two sons over a property dispute,
a man smothering his mother to death
on a like issue while she slept,
a policeman throttling his wife
at home for no ostensible reason,
a mentally disturbed mother flinging
her child to death in a well.
And,
a day or so earlier,
from other parts,
two separate incidents of primary school children
being crushed to death
by their own school van
because the driver was in a hurry.
A quick check of news
from states resulted in similar reports,
not bunched as in those few hours
but
enough to show that each passage of 24 hours
brings forth news of this sort from all over.
The wonder is
that we Indians shrug this sort of thing
and move on with daily living; perhaps,
there's something to be said for
insouciance on others' troubles.
After all,
life has to go on.
And, yet, let's go over that again.
For, we aren't talking of tragedies brought by nature.
But,
of the plethora of man-made negatives,
of people who do wrong,
often barely speakable wrong,
for reasons that have much to do
with how our society and systems are structured,
the behaviour we get along and away with.
Why, for instance,
should any driver
not be bothered to wait till
a passenger or passerby has
fully got down
or has moved safely away?
An accident, is the defence.
Well, think of the aftermath.
What about the other incidents mentioned,
when people seem to have lost their minds
or moorings or both to do what they did?
It would be interesting in each
such case to trace the sequence of events back.
The impetus or environment at each such
step was surely addressable.
Of course,
the overwhelming majority of us
do not go about throttling parents or spouses,
running over children and so on.
Yet,
the frustrations or training
or lack of care and so on is shared
to a rather substantial degree in society.
Perhaps five minutes,
no more, at the start and
end of each day to think of this,
with some calm and a belief that this need not be,
would not come amiss.
The news we get indicates so.
