The most remote and harshest of continents on the planet still remains shrouded in mystery. During six months of the year, Antarctica conceals its secrets, some dating back to the origin of the world, beneath a dark night and a harsh climate that does not support human life. And yet, life there is abundant and never stops. Whales, penguins and other animals are frozen continent of its natural habitat. The man is a stranger in this world is only now beginning to understand.

The site of the Boston Globe has assembled a collection of stunning photos taken by eminent scientists in various missions and witness the last years of Antarctic exploration. Besides the intrinsic beauty of the landscape, wildlife and natural features, these images give us the exact size and raw and the smallness of human frailty.
