Aromatherapy is probably the most increasingly popular holistic treatment of our age. Since prehistoric times, aromatherapy was used to promote physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Almost everyone has experienced some of the aromatherapy benefits often without even realizing it. Today, modern medical science comes to agree with our ancestors and prove that essential oils can be used for therapeutic purposes.

The essential oils are absorbed into the body with two main ways, inhalation and absorption by skin. When an essential oil is inhaled, it activates the nerve cells in the nasal cavity which send impulses that stimulate the brain and produce positive feelings and emotions, while at the same time substances of the essential oils are drawn into the lungs and then quickly absorbed into the bloodstream providing physical therapeutic benefits. Moreover, when an essential oil is applied to skin (never undiluted), it penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream this way.

Therefore, aromatherapy can be helpful in combating various conditions and promoting emotional wellbeing. The most noteworthy psychological benefits of Aromatherapy are spirit stimulation, mental clarity, stress relief and mood improvement. On the other hand, essential oils can help circulation system, support immune system, regulate human hormones and aid skin regeneration - just to name few of the physical benefits.

Aromatherapy is administered in mainly three forms:

Aromatherapy Treatment

1) Aerial Spray, where oils are sprayed into the air to disinfect the surrounding's and fragrance.
2) Vapour inhalation, where the aromatic oils are inhaled in vapour form for respiratory disorders, decongestion and for other psychological
relaxations
3) External applications, where the infected parts are massaged with oils. For instance, sprains,
skin infections, beauty enhancement. This also involves taking bath with oil mixed in the water.

There are six main types of oils used in aromatherapy.

Namely:

1. Essential oils: Eucalypts oil, grapefruit oil etc. These are mainly fragrant oils extracted from plants through various processes
2. Absolutes: These are mainly flower extracts. Sometimes they are also taken from tender plant tissues.
3. Phytoncides : These are terpene and sulfuric based organic compounds taken from plants. These are not much popular because of their potential side effects.
4.
Herbal oils: These are basically aqueous oils primarily distilled from herbs. The most common ones are rose, lemon balm and chamomile.
5. Infusions: Water based extracts from different plant material (e.g. rose infusion)
6. Carrier oils: These are the essential oils diluted by plant base materials

Finally, something that must be cleared is that aromatherapy is an alternative complementary medicine and should not be used as the major treatment, but as an addition to the healing process of the standard medical care.
