M.F. Hussain passes away

Celebrated Indian artist M.F. Husain, paintings, died here today after being unwell for over a month.
He was 95.
Popularly known as MF and regarded as 'Picasso of India', the artist breathed his last at the Royal Brompton Hospital at 2.30 am local time MHO
Husain had been keeping 'indifferent health' for the last one-and-a-half month, family sources said.
They said that funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised.
Born in Pandharpur in Maharashtra on September 17, 1915, Husain courted controversy over his paintings of Hindu goddesses.
His paintings on goddesses Durga and Saraswati invited the wrath of Hindu groups which attacked his house in 1998 and vandalised his art works.
In February 2006, Husain was charged with hurting sentiments of people because of his nude portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses.
In the wake of legal challenges and death threats in his home country, Husain had been living abroad in self-imposed exile since 2006 and was offered Qatari citizenship in January 2010, which he accepted.
As he had not responded to summons from an Indian district court in Haridwar, his properties in India were attached as per court orders and a bailable warrant was issued against him by the court.
Though Husain had been saying that he was keen to return to India, his wish had remained unfulfilled.
Three of Husain paintings recently topped a Bonham's auction here, going under the hammer for Rs 2.32 crore with an untitled oil work in which the legendary artist combined his iconic subject matters - horse and woman - fetching Rs 1.23 crore alone.

Come here, work, go home: UK tells migrants

As part of continuing efforts to reduce migration from India and other countries outside the European Union , the David Cameron government on Thursday announced proposals that seek to prevent foreign professionals from settling here permanently.
The proposals, announced in a consultation exercise, will affect Indian skilled workers as well as domestic workers such as cooks and 'ayahs', who travel to Britain with their employers.

Immigration minister Damian Green said: "We want the brightest and best workers to come to the UK, make a strong contribution to our economy while they are here, and then return home."

Campaign groups said that if foreign professionals were not allowed to settle here permanently, they would rather migrate to countries such as Canada and Australia.

Amit Kapadia of the Highly Skilled Migrants Forum told PTI that it will launch a protest against the plans.

India is among three countries mentioned in the consultation document from where the most number of overseas domestic workers come to Britain; the other two are the Philippines and Indonesia.

The tighter rules will also affect diplomats from India and other non-EU countries posted her who bring along their domestic help.

Under current rules, migrants who work in Britain for five years are allowed to settle here permanently. The proposals seek to break this link between working and automatic permanent settlement, except for a limited number of high worth individuals.

The plans include re-classifying UK visas as either 'temporary' or 'permanent' and introduce stricter criteria for those who want to stay.

Green said that the proposals were aimed at "breaking the link between temporary and permanent migration." He said: "Settlement has become almost automatic for those who choose to stay. This needs to change. The immigration system has got to be made to work properly. We want the brightest and best workers to come to the UK, make a strong contribution to our economy while they are here, and then return home."

The consultation proposes that people earning over 150,000 pounds or doing jobs that have a specific economic or social value to the UK be allowed to stay in the country permanently.

Plans include a new category to allow most exceptionally talented skilled workers to apply to stay after a three-year period in the UK.

Home secretary Theresa May said: "I shall break that link and return to a position where Britain will continue to attract the brightest and best workers, who will make a strong contribution to our economy and society during their stay, then return home.

A small number of exceptional migrants will be able to stay permanently but for the majority, coming here to work will not lead automatically to settlement in the UK.

How to tell your boss that you are overworked.

Are you overworked? You feel like a stranger being with your family and friends, because they got used to not having you around; you miss the special events of your family; you force yourself to adjust to the fact that you do compromise your habits and social life for your job - these are the symptoms that you are overworked. And you reach to this point where you have to convey to your boss that your workload is too heavy; here are some ways that would help you to do it
Present your work schedule
You can present your work schedule to your boss, not as a conflict but to seek his suggestion on how best you can manage the workload. Present your current projects, deadlines, and pending assignments. Let it be a detailed analysis of your job explaining all the responsibilities assigned to you, the required, the depth of strain that goes into these, and any additional works that goes beyond your job description. You can also explain him how the heavy workload affects your effectiveness at work.

Discuss solutions

Let the talk be a healthy one where you seek suggestions to reduce your workload or to find ways to better manage it. While you present your concerns, do make sure that your boss understands that you intend a discussion that should ideally be aimed at finding solutions and to figure out what can be eliminated or delegated. If you have some suggestions or solutions already thought about, throw them out to your boss and it will add more value to the meeting. If your boss respects your worth in the organization, he wouldn't risk the possibility of losing a valuable employee by ignoring the option of lessening your workload.

Get your works prioritized

When you make your boss understand that you are assigned with more tasks than what you can achieve, it's highly important that you get them prioritized. With proper presentation of you assignments in order of importance and required timeframe, you manager with his experience, can suggest you new ideas to help them prioritize. Emphasize on a work planner that will enable you to focus the most part of your day on the highest priorities. You should compile adequate information about your projects and responsibilities before approaching your boss so that you can explain him everything with possible solutions.

Be bold and straightforward

A self contemplation over your honesty at work should be done before you step into his room. The feeling that your points are genuine and valid, will give you the confidence to talk to him straightforward. Maintain the eye-contact which will convey that you are not nervous or dishonest, but serious and assertive. Be bold to put forward your issues, but do not get into his cabin with your temper flaring.

Talk at the right time

Be professional; make a formal appointment to have a closed door meeting to discuss the work related issues. The boss too is loaded with work, so you should seek a convenient time when he can spend enough time with you where you don't have to wrap up the meeting in a hurry. You wouldn't like your subordinates around when you discuss this matter with your manager, so ensure you ask for a personal one-on-one discussion. This will encourage a more interactive discussion which can result greater understanding between both.
It's not necessary that your boss listen to all your issues. However, these steps can help you to a great extent to make that happen. What do else you feel need to be taken care of when someone decides to approach his boss for the same? Your comments are invited

India to have 24 million rural Internet users

I

According to a new research study by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, the rural India's internet users are growing day by day. In their report titled 'Internet in Rural India', they have mentioned that the total number of active internet users in rural area is projected to rise by 98 percent to touch 24 million by December 2011. In December 2010 the number was 12.1 million. The study found various reasons for this dramatic growth. One of the main reasons for this growth in user numbers in rural areas is the growing awareness level about internet. According to the research, about 69 percent of the rural population is aware of internet as opposed to 16 percent projected in last year's report.

The second reason for the growth of rural internet users is that access has become easier and only 18 percent have had to access internet from common service centers or cyber cafes located outside the 10 km radius as opposed to 54 percent last year.

The research also highlighted that many people use internet for entertainment and communication. 41 percent of them claimed that they used the Internet for watching, downloading and listening to music or uploading or downloading pictures while 32 percent also used the Internet for email, chat and communication. Moreover Government initiatives facilitated by Department of Information Technology (DIT) such as National e-Governance Plan (NeGP), State Wide Area Network (SWAN) and Common Service Centres (CSC) are increasingly maturing and this also can be the reason for increase of internet users in rural areas.
